Darren Johnson

EGAR staff were delighted to be invited to a Social Enterprise London reception at City Hall, where they met various members of Boris Johnson, the Mayor's London Assembly. Darren Johnson (Chair of the London Assembly) was very interested in EGAR's education work and asked to visit EGAR at their office in Islington. He spent time there talking about youth issues and looking at the range of education 'talking toolkits' and posters that EGAR designs and publishes, to support children, teenage and young people's work.

Endorsement from Darren Johnson:

'EGAR produce interactive educational games for young people, which are designed to stimulate structured discussion on vital topics for young people, such as knives, climate change and drugs. This excellent project deserves much wider recognition and I would love to see it made available to all London based Youth Services'.

Darren Johnson (Chair of the London Assembly).

EGAR is now supporting Mothers Against Violence (M.A.V).  MAV was formed in 1999, this was as a direct result of the Manchester community being affected by four gun shootings in one week, which resulted in two fatalities. A meeting was held and mothers from across the South Manchester area met to discuss how they as a community could stop these senseless killings and deter their children from the illusion of gang culture and gun crime.

MAV has worked tirelessly and fiercely to raise awareness and bring together communities and agencies in an attempt to address this issue.

MAV has organised a Million Mothers March which will take place on Sunday 23rd August 2009 from 2-5.30pm at Albert Square, Manchester.

PSHE News:

The Government has recently announced that Personal Social and Health Education (PSHE) will now be compulsory for teaching in schools from ages 5 through to 16 years. Lessons will be 'age appropriate' as there has been issues with sex education being taught at young ages but this is a great initiative for schools to educate life skills.
